National Youth Leadership Training

February 27 - March 1, 2026  &  March 06-08, 2026

This Course is open to Scouts BSA, Explorers, Sea Scouts & Venturers

What is NYLT? The National Youth Leadership Training Course is a six-day outdoor experience for youth leaders in support of the Unit Leader’s responsibility for training the Unit’s youth leaders. It is conducted by the Tuscarora Council’s Training Committee using a syllabus published by Scouting America. Scouting recognizes that Unit Leaders have the responsibility of training their youth leaders. The purpose of the National Youth Leadership Training Course is not to assume the Unit Leader’s role, but to support it. This course is very similar to the Wood Badge training for adults.

Purpose: The training of youth leaders in the Unit is important in helping individual Scouts, Venturers, and their Units grow. Scouting America has developed a six-day training experience, the National Youth Leadership Training Course (NYLT), which has proven valuable in the training of youth leaders. The course will stress the skills of leadership that will make youth leaders more effective in their Unit leadership positions. The skills taught will build upon and reinforce the Unit Leader’s leadership development of the youth and directly benefit the Unit’s program.

More importantly, the Scout or Venturer will be exposed to living skills that will allow them to become a successful leader in any organization. This course will provide the youth with the tools needed to develop to his or her full leadership potential.

Qualifications: Scouts BSA members who participate in the course must be at least a First Class Scout and 13 years old (but not yet 18), having completed ILST and have been recommended by their unit leader. Venturers and Sea Scouts must be at least 14 years old (or 13 and completed 8th grade), no older than 20 years old, and must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews or Ships. It is important that all participants have basic camping, cooking, and hiking skills.
